How often do you pamper yourself?
I’m not always very good at it. Most days, my focus is on other things and in the process, I sometimes put myself last.
If there’s one thing I treasure now that I’m a bit older and a lot wiser (I hope!) is that I MUST take care of myself before I can take care of others. One of my absolute favorite ways to unwind and rejuvenate is to take a long, hot bath with a great book to read. I toss in a little meditation (without the book, of course) and in a short time, my mind is fresh and I’m raring to go. When I skip this process, I’m pretty much a cranky bear and everyone around me retreats to the forest. For years, I felt guilty for taking the time out to do this, but while studying the habits of passionate people, I’ve learned that the far majority of them read…and read often. So I’ve learned to look at my bath time as Bath University.
As it turns out, I’m not alone.
Meet Jan and Sarah. The two gals are the heart and soul behind Konenkii, a gift service designed especially for women over 40. The company puts together boxes filled with items that are carefully chosen with the purpose of celebration, education, and a little pampering thrown in. Each box is delivered quarterly–and here’s the fun: you never know what you will get with each delivery. I have a box coming next month and I’m looking forward with eager anticipation as to what surprises will be in there.
I got in touch with Jan and Sarah to find out more about Konenkii and the inspiration behind the company. Both women are entrepreneurs at heart; Jan with her company, Big Blue Dot, a branding and design company, and Sarah with Six Red Marbles, an educational media company. Their paths crossed when Jan began to explore the idea of a company serving women exclusively.
“I set up my own company to help women help through menopause in a more positive way,” Jan said. “That idea became a platform for aging in a more positive way. I did focus groups and I invited Sarah to one of my focus groups.”
The two of them began to talk through coffee meetings that turned into lunch and dinner meetings. They discovered they had a lot in common: they both grew up in Maine, attended the same small college, and shared a love of entrepreneurship with similar businesses.
And they both were at a point in their lives where they wanted something more: they wanted to do something meaningful for women to celebrate the second half of life.
“The great thing about being 50 is that I have some freedom,” Sarah said. “I’m the sole earner in my family. I wanted something with meaning and purpose and I wanted a partner. I didn’t want to do it alone. This made it better to share with Jan, who is a great partner. We want to empower women, because experiencing life can sometimes be tough.”
The two of them are no stranger to adversity and the delicate dance of keeping it all running while everything is falling down around you. Cancer. Divorce. Losing parents. Losing the sight in one eye. Children and step-children.
That’s exactly why Konenkii was born. The word comes from the Japanese word, Konenki, which means “menopause.” Here in America, the word tends to have a negative connotation. In Japan, the word has a positive meaning of renewal and a new beginning.
“When I was first researching names, I thought about the women I wanted to attract and appeal to–women who are experiencing a huge transition, who are trying to figure out what to do the rest of their lives. KO means ‘renewal,’ NEN means ‘years,’ and KI means ‘energy.'”
Jan and Sarah added a second “i” to the name to represent the two of them working together.
The gift boxes are just the beginning of the company; there’s more to Konenkii’s vision of inspiring and empowering women: connection is next. Jan and Sarah plan to use Konenkii as a platform to bring women together to share experiences and celebrate their lives. They’re passionately driven to redefining aging, something we do here at Growing Bolder.
“Passion is deep within you, no one else can know how it works for you,” Sarah explained. “It is feeling so strongly about something that you want to follow that dream.”
“Passion is about searching, it’s about never being satisfied,” Jan said. “I know it sounds like the opposite of what many people say about passion, but if you’re satisfied, it means you’re inert. for me, passion is constantly exploring. You’re in the flow–you get lost in it.”
It is that very passion that finds Jan and Sarah spending hours searching for just the right gifts to put in each box every quarter. They want every box to be opened with anticipation, wonder, and yes, passion, too.
