When It Feels Like a “Two Steps Forward, Twenty Steps Back” Day

April 18, 2014 By Karen Putz 2 Comments

20 steps back

It was one of “those days.”  I spent the day doing the one thing that I love to do: barefoot water skiing.  I was at the World Barefoot Center in Winter Haven, Florida getting instruction from a World Barefoot Champion.

But nothing was going well.

Granted, it was only my second day on the water after a long winter.  Try as I might, I just couldn’t get my body to do anything right on the water.  I would make a tiny bit of progress and then regress back to “beginnerhood.”  After racking up crash after crash, I called it a day.

Two steps forward, tewnty steps back.  Life is like that sometimes.

When you hit one of life’s road bumps and you feel like you’re not making progress, here are some suggestions:

Change It Up:  Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If whatever you’re doing isn’t working, change something. Anything.

Shift Your Focus:  Put your attention on a different aspect of whatever it is you’re working on. Sometimes a shift in focus or attention is all you need to shake things up and move forward.

Consult an Expert or a Mentor: Guidance and advice from those who are smarter and wiser can be just what you need to obtain new information and insight.

Try Again Tomorrow: A brand new day with renewed energy toward your goal can be the break that you need to move forward again.

Sure enough, a combination of all of the above resulted in marked improvement for me the very next day.

Do you have a tip or trick that works for you?

Great tips, Karen – we all have days like this, right?

My suggestion is to do something that gives you joy: go for a walk, look through a photo album of your grandchildren, or call a friend.
